A Productive Day before Thanksgiving Break

Victory Place @ Coppell

The day before the Thanksgiving break is always hectic, but we got many things accomplished.

First, three learners did Book Talks.

A little background...The district sent me to see Penny Kittle a couple of years ago. Since then, we have incorporated Silent Sustained Reading for 20 minutes and added in Book Talks. Now this didn't happen overnight. It was a two year process. To build our classroom libraries, I applied for a grant through the Coppell Education Foundation and received $1,000. My principal approved another $500. Then, we slowly added SSR into our day -first just 3 times a week, then for 10 minutes daily, and now 20 minutes daily. Recently, we have incorporated educators reading during SSR too.

Anyway, it is great to hear learners talk about the books they are reading, suggest other titles and share their overall love of reading (even if that is not what they think they are doing). I heard a comment the other day from a learner, "This is the first book I have read since 8th grade." I am very honored to have encouraged reading in that 10th grader and my other learners.

After lunch, two of my learners suggested doing a Mannequin Challenge  I have overheard learners talk about this new phenonemon, but it nice to watch the learners lead this pop culture event. I am sure it will pass soon like Pokemon Go so I was glad to indulge their teenage fun.
